    Irishcolle…
    (137 items)

Many years ago I purchased some military documents belonging to an Irish soldier who served in the British army in World War 1. Inside one of the folded documents was this little cut out Kangaroo. It seems to be made from some kind of skin with some original hair still attached with a ribbon around the neck and a small black bead for its eye. It is 2 5/8 inches high.
In WW1 soldiers from different regiments and countries exchanged souvenirs such as uniform buttons and hat badges as well as a range of hand made items.
I wonder if this little item was given as a souvenir by an Australian soldier. I contacted a museum in Australia but with no luck. I also contacted the Imperial War Museum but they had not seen another example.
Can anyone throw any light on this item?

I hope one of our war experts see this and help out. It's very special to me as an Aussie.
It certainly looks like kangaroo skin, and the ribbon looks like it's from a medal.
      Interesting and unique.
