An interesting piece which does not appear to be very common. Certainly archaic compare to a cooler of today. It was stored away for many years in a building and purchased from an antique store by the previous owner. The bottle opener on one side reads: "It Likes You, You Like It" with the 7Up logo in the middle. I suppose the paint is original(faint gray/green color with red primer under? It has the 7Up logo embossed on all panels except one side. The top panel has 7Up on the top and bottom. As I understand, this is from the 1930's or 1940's era. Very different style of cooler. I would think 1950's though. Love it!
I failed to mention that it is quite heavy(60-75lbs). Certainly not the type of cooler to bring on a picnic. LOL!
What you have is a cooler made by the Quikold Company... It's been modified/cut down. It started out as a Standard size cooler. you can see that model on the website quikold.com
It would have had 2 lids, would have been waste high, with an area to store 2- 24 cases underneath. on either side of the embossing it would have screened text "You Like It" - "It Likes You" Looks like someone got creative and made a portable cooler for picnics.
I Love it, modified or not! You now have a portable ice chest, built like a Sherman Tank, that i would love to own myself. Clean it up, Paint it, restore the 7up logos, and you will have the best looking ice chest on the beach! Great Find!
PS: I forgot to ask if it has a drain line on the backside? If not, i would install one, if you plan on painting it.
Would have had a drain that would come out of the bottom.. the drain would have had a wing nut stopper that you would twist to open and close the drain to let out the water. Would be a easy restoration to keep as is.. the entire cooler is bolted together... Unless it was altered differently.. if you removed the tub/liner you will find the outer shell is bolted down each seem with 3 bolts.
This was originally a white cooler with orange and black logo...
You may want to paint the inner tub to keep from rusting any further...
Cool as is... nice to see someone being resourceful... took it and made something
they could use... They may have even cut this down to use as a counter top cooler
found in many small stores back in the day to save on floor space... Coke had several counter top models from the 30s and 40s...
Most of these old floor ice coolers were scrapped once the new electric coolers and upright machines came along... and it has the original handle.
