In 1989, Atlantic City, NJ was a gambling hotspot. Amtrak tried to "cash in" (no pun intended) by starting NY - AC service as well as service from Wash DC and Virginia. Unfortunately, the casinos wouldn't sponsor the train like they do with their buses, and with the former routes of The Blue Comet and The Nellie Bly out of service, Amtrak had to go almost all the way to Philadelphia to get on the PRSL, as well as change from electric to diesel. After 6 years of a not outstanding service, Amtrak pulled out of AC. NJT services Philly to AC now, and most of the riders are commuters who work at the remaining casinos. I was fortunate to ride the first train in 1989, and in 1995 I rode the last day of service.
