15 inches long. 9 inches wide and stands 9 1/2 inches tall this little mystery was found in a barn at an estate sale of a gentleman with roots back to the original 13 colonies. I am not sure of the wood but I do recognize some markings that could be dates and signatures but unfortunately I am not skilled enough to make out their truth, they look to be carved in on the sides and underbelly. I am wondering if anyone can help me with dating the leg design. I think that might give it a ballpark birthday, I thought I saw 1749 underneath but cant be sure. It's solid and can be used. It was a find at an estate sale and other than what I have already written I know nothing more of it's provenance. I would very much appreciate any opinion or thought as to it's heritage. Thank you
At 9 1/2 inches tall and in a barn I would think possibly a milking stool or for working on horse shoes/hoofs etc. I think your birth date is off by a century or century and a half.
I love this piece! Have you put any poly or anything else on it? I ask because I'm debating on adding some kind of protectant to my bench.
