This pendant belonged to my grandfather George Washington Patterson, III, born in the 1880s. He was active in the US Army as a nurse in WWI and as a doctor in WWII, was the doctor on Alcatraz for several years, then continued in private practice in N. California.
Size: 1.25" L x 5/8" W
The front of the pendant is an asymmetrical hexagon with an outline of the USA continent and the year "1915." A 3D Caduceus extends top to bottom through the middle with the letters "DNB" in the middle.
The back is stamped 10K with a maker's mark that appears to be the letter "N" within a chevron (I don't have a loop). My grandfather's name is engraved below that "G. W. Patterson" and below his name the numbers "5349."
His name/number were engraved after the fact. The pendant does not appear to be a one-of-a-kind (possibly military issue); but, is of quality.
My grandfather did not wear or own any jewelry (not even a wedding ring) except this piece which was on a fob with his pocket watch, so this was important to him.
Anyone know what this is, why he might have had it, and what its significance might be?
