Here we have Steiff's classic Arco German Shepherd in the largest standard size made. He is 35 cm, standing, unjointed, and made from tannish colored mohair. His sideburns and tail are made from longer mohair. His back and sides are airbrushed with black patches, much like the real dog. He has three black embroidered claws on each foot. Arco's face is detailed with brown and black pupil eyes, a black hand embroidered noses, and a friendly peach felt lined open mouth. Of course, his red felt tongue really adds to his smile!

This Arco pattern was manufactured in 10, 17, 22, and 35 cm from 1957 through 1961. In all honesty this is the first time I have even had or even seen an Arco in the 35 cm size in my 40 years of collecting; he is very rare and seldom if ever comes onto the secondary market.

where is the button for the ear? Steiff would have the button.

@Woofy: Correct, in a perfect world. Many times the button fell out or was removed. The button used in the time frame of this Arco's production was a little nickle colored one that simply connected to the animal loosely via a few prongs. More often than not this style it did not stand the test of time - or gravity! Cheers, SG
