Just as the name suggests. Look how bad this coin was struck. This damage was caused by either a hard and brittle piece of foreign matter or part of the die or collar breaking off and then shattering or exploding when punched in the striking chamber.
Cool! Did you get it graded? I have an 89 dime with this on the reverse (high point of torch). I a few quarters too that are wild looking but I can't definitively pin down what is going on with them. I don't have anyone in the coin community & I'm too cheap to send coins off with only my input.
