I have literally been wondering what this d**ned thing is really supposed to be for nearly *40 years* -- never finding the slightest clue. Can ANYBODY help answer the question??? <beg>
I admit I'd kinda forgot about it until rediscovering it on the auction racks after it got unearthed from Mom/Dad's basement . Once it found its way onto the 'unclaimed/free-pile' rack at the end of the sale and still nobody took it, I grabbed it for 'my pile' because my curiosity had been rekindled... <sigh><headdesk>
When I was a kid we used it occasionally to hold 'small critters' (butterflies, bugs, hamsters, etc) and even back then, it occurred to me that it was entirely too complicated (and nicely made!) to just be a 'bug cage'...??
It is made of galvanized 3/16" hardware cloth in an aluminum frame with rubber feet, and is about 8" across and 9" tall overall. Its aluminum lid simply press-fits onto the top of the cage, and is particularly peculiar in that it is hollow, its outside is topped with what appears to be a nipple fitting one could attach a 5/8" hose (?) to, and its inside features a roughly 3-1/2" dome perforated with a pattern of tiny holes, kind of like a showerhead. There are absolutely no markings of any kind on it, anywhere.
Could it be a 'vegetable washer' for the kitchen? Or a 'parts washer' for the auto shop? Or a 'fumigator' for the garden? OR WHAT...??????

A cricket pot is my guess.
it kind of reminds me of a part of an old electric coffee pot my mom used when we had lots of people for brunch.
Does look like one of those old coffee perks. but the grounds would get thru that gauge screen. Don't those type need a pipe in the middle to carry the boiling water to the top ?
THANKS EVERYBODY for the loves, and to blunderbuss2 and ho2cultcha for your guesses! If this thing was part of a coffeemaker, it must have been a HUGE one...? (as, if you could find a filter large enough, you could easily put a *whole can* of coffee in there??!!)
And, I'm not a coffee drinker. lol
I think the clue is the pierced piece of metal under the lid, and the mesh bottom open to drain. My guess is a restaurant size strainer, soaker, cleaner, or hydrating container, it probably had a top attachment for inserting liquid, and the bottom would sit in a large bowl. I'm thinking beans, or other type of food that is stored dry.
