Well, I saw an interesting estate sale posted for today and decided to go. They had a lot of Asian inspired items and other things. I saw this piece sitting on the table and picked it up. It is very heavy for its size and has a heavy glass lid that lifts up. I had not seen a piece like this before, so I asked the lady there what it was. She told me that it was a European container that would hold communion wafers. They told me that it was probably around 100 years old. Unfortunately there is a crack/break in the glass, but I still think it was worth the price I paid. I tried to do a little research, but did not see anything exactly like this. I saw a similar one that was a traveling communion set that had a built-in cup and storage area for the wafers. Does anyone know if this is indeed a wafer holder or what it might be? Also any guesses on the age
i think it is a ciborium or maybe a monstrance? it's been so many years since i was an altar boy, that i get them all mixed up now. whatever it is, it's pretty cool!
Ho2cultcha, thank you so much for the info.
Thanks for all the loves. Can anyone confirm age on this?
Ms. Crystal, thanks for your comment. I still have yet to find anything that looks like this. I just know that it appears pretty old and has stunning detail.
this one is described as a silver overlay dresser jar at LiveAuctioneers:

Tallcakes, wow, finally another picture that looks like mine. I did not even consider a dresser jar. I wonder what this piece would have held. Thank you so much :)
