Chinese red leather box?

I came across this box in my local charity shop, and i just loved it.
I have no idea what type of box it is, or when/where it was made.
It has a glass insert on the lid, and the top storage section is decorated with rows of symbols, that i assume are Chinese? They are wooden horizontal sections lined with a black felt.
The bottom has a drawer, again lined with a black felt.
The outside of the box looks like stitched leather over the top of wood.
There is a gold and black print of a dragon across the front.
I would love to know more about this box...who made it, when it was made, where it was made...and mostly what it was meant to be used for?
I love collecting boxes that appeal to me, and i so enjoy finding out if they have a history to them :)
If anyone has any info, please do let me know.
