This key was dug 9/14/17 in Baltimore City. It is hand-stamped "WTV 55". I am unfamiliar with the style. Other older objects found within close proximity: an early 1860s Indian Head cent and a Williams Cleaner Type III bullet used during the Civil War.
At the time the key was lost this part of Baltimore City was part of Baltimore County. The dig site is within 100 feet of Harford Road and in an area that has documented habitation back to the late 17th century.
Key measures 2 and a half inches in length and is just over one inch at the widest portion. It must be brass.
The general shape suggests it may be a key for a Wootens Patent railroad lock. If you can find the remains of an approximately 3/8" long iron tab inserted into the fat portion of the shank, that will confirm it.
Thanks Uncle Ron! There was a railroad line that ran along what is now Harford Road. This key was dug within 150 ft of that road.
