Gotta admit it'd match my kitchen better if the handle was red or yellow, but green it is, so green is good too?! ;-)
This little glass syrup dispenser jar has a polished metal top with springloaded sliding closure operated by the thumb lever. Measures about 6" tall and 5" across at its widest including the handle.
On the underside of the top by the handle are the words "PAT.NO. 1,884,840 OTHERS PEND." and on the underside of the thumb lever are the words "MADE IN U.S.A.". The glass jar itself also seems to have the words "MADE IN U.S.A." cast into its bottom along with the 'sunburst' pattern, but the lettering is difficult to make out.
I'm guessing the green handle is made of bakelite, though it might be some other early form of plastic instead. Also guessing this piece dates from the 1950's-60's, where it (or those like it) could have been commonly found on thousands of diner counters and restaurant tables all across the USA...for that matter, contemporary versions of the same thing still *are* found in countless Denny's, IHOP's, etc. etc. I don't know offhand if this one ever served commercially, it might have actually lived in a home kitchen all its life instead.
