Hello I have found this old ring and am wondering if I am right in thinking it's victorian , maybe someone that knows about victorian rings will be able to tell.

One of the several hallmarks surely indicates the year the ring was made. An exploration of English date letters may be fruitful. Although antique in style, my sense is that it is more contemporary than that, going by the shape of the shank. In cross section, this one would be nearly rectangular, something I have not seen in rings I know to be Victorian or Edwardian/Regency, which are flat on the interior side, convex on the exterior, half round in cross section. But...? The marks should tell all, if you can find the key. Very pretty, no matter the age. :)

Thanks cameo the hallmarks look very small and very hard to see but I will try to clean this ring & make them more visible.

Thanks cameo I think this might be as old as Georgian and the stone paste but sill not sure.

Britain is the only place I know of that puts so many marks on a single piece. If you can recognize any of them as a letter, you have a good start on researching the age.

Thanks cameo, I can't make them out but they have a few that look like georgian marks from the shape but all are very worn, I have been looking at lots of old ring styles and I think I've seen similar which was described as victorian, the stone has me confused as well, I thought it was paste but not sure anymore.

The problem with trying to date items by style is that once a style is developed, nothing prevents future generations from replicating it. Major periods, such as Victorian, Art Nouveau & Art Deco periodically have revivals. I see rings on eBay described as Victorian that hold a lab grown stone I know was not commercially available much earlier than 1940. I own a ring very much in the Victorian style that I bought directly from the jeweler who made it. Feeling pretty old these days, but not that old. :)

Yes thanks cameo very true,it can be so difficult, older stuff normally goes in the pot so I've been told, there is no respect for the old these days LOL.

That is brought home to me whenever I hope to get a seat on a crowded subway. :)
