Seen this interesting work of art at a yard sale, trying to find out information on the web about it and can not find it out there. written in pencil on the matt, Somewhere in France. any help with this is greatly appreciated.
I recently purchased a framed copy of this watercolor copyrighted in 1918 by John W. Whisler. In the early 20th c., Whisler was operating in Pittsburgh. F. Marion Dyer, a/k/a Francis Marion Dyer was a regionally noted artist who lived in the Pennsylvania/Maryland area and did oils and watercolors in the early 20th c. He is best known (I believe) for his watercolors which usually had a romantic theme. There are some avid regional collectors of his works. The subject work is a departure, of sorts, where he delved into a war setting for this watercolor. A number of art auctioneers are well aware of Dyer. Although his watercolors have auctioned in the $60 range, a small number of his oils and watercolors have auctioned higher... in the $160 to $270 range. This is what I think I know on this subject... but there probably is more info on Dyer out there. Frank McGee
