Another last-moment 'save' from the auction racks, after seeing it again for the first time in 25+yrs -- that plus the realization that it was already officially "old" when I first got it another 20+yrs before that, probably...so's maybe it might be worth holding onto after all. (or maybe not -- but I bet y'all will be able to tell me?!) It was given to me by a next-door neighbor lady when I was a kid, a 'leftover' in her home from one of her then-grown sons. Thus, it should date from the late 1950's to early 60's.
"SPALDING VARSITY" embossed at its center with "OFFICIAL SIZE - WEIGHT" and "339" in circle logo below, "DOUBLE LINED TOP GRAIN LEATHER" on one end and "John Unitas" signature on the other. It is kinda scuffed up a little, but overall in pretty good condition I think.
Turned out that football never 'caught on' with me (as a player or fan) but no matter that, it should still look pretty cool sitting on a shelf somewhere...?
Here's another question for the collective knowledge -- should I try to give it a (long overdue?) treatment with some kind of 'leather conditioner', or leave it in its 'as-is' condition??
