I found this enormous grasshopper yesterday at my favorite junkshop. It's definitely seen better days, but what a beauty! It is a planter and was filled with dirt, dead plants and pieces of it's legs. it took me nearly 3 hours to clean it up. i didn't even see the signature until scrubbed for awhile. This thing is a whopping 27 inches long by 15 inches tall! I believe it was created in the 1890s. The Massiers made more grasshoppers based on the same model later, but they were smaller and didn't have nearly as good details as this one [in my opinion]. I think that this comes out of the Victorian obsession with insects.
Do you think that this piece is worth restoring?
This grasshopper is 27 inches [69 cm] long by 15 inches [39 cm] tall!
WOW !....what an impressive find Ho2. Majolica is so delicate especially at this size. Hope all or most of the pieces were still there. Very cool !! :)
Awesome love love

Wow wow wow! I'm jealous!!! :-)
It seems professional restore is worthy!

thanks so much kyra! very useful info! thank you Poire!
Wow, super find, very lucky you !~
thanks Phil!
I'd have it restored ...it's very special indeed ! :)
it is a beautiful piece! But professional repairs may be beyond the value, as these repairs are quite costly. And then you have a repaired item that might not necessarily result in added value to cover your initial investment plus repair costs. Maybe you can find someone if your general area for an examination and estimated repairs.
Wow!!
Katydid good!!
thanks mikel, TallCakes and racer!
from what i can find, the value - even as is - is well worth a restoration effortl. here's one that sold in 2010 at Christie's. it's about 1/3 smaller than mine. http://www.christies.com/lotfinder/Lot/a-french-majolica-vase-modeled-as-a-5375076-details.aspx
stunning!!!
thanks Sean!
