A month ago I found this ring at a flea market. It's marked
    Sterling 925
    GFIS
    Mexico

Does anyone know what kind of stone this might be?

That's beautiful! The stone almost looks like Dragon's Breath. I found quite a number of other pieces with the same marks. Some say it's a Taxco mark, but I don't know for sure if it is Taxco.

      What I thought it was:

Think it is meant to look like Mexican fire agate, but my feeling is that it is glass. Still must make for great finger-flash. :)

It may be GF15. G is the first initial of the state in which the ring was produced, the initial F is the first initial of the last name of the silversmith whose work was the fifteenth registered in the state. The G probably stands for Guanajuato.

Great find! It must be a conversation piece when you wear it!

I'm with Cameosleuth for art glass :-)
