24 " coiled basket with leather binding unknown origin

My daughter picked up this basket at a thrift shop. As the photo shows it is 24" across. I am not sure what type of grass it is coiled with. She found it in the Motherlode area of California. Native American, or African? I hope the photo shows the basket is mostly flat with about a 4" raised rim. I am curious about it's origin. I have tried to find something similar to learn more, but I would be grateful for some help. THANK YOU, in advance if you can offer your knowledge.
