Hello I am just going through some old stones that I have cleaned, I don't know for sure but think this might be sapphire, I am thinking this one might make a nice ring.

      1) A sapphire this size would be quite expensive, unlikely to be knocking around. 2) As shown, color is wrong for fancy sapphire. 3) If the last photo is showing a scuffed seam where the sides meet, it is too scuffed for sapphire. The only stone harder than corundum is diamond; rubies & sapphires are not easily scratched.

Thanks for helping cameo as it's great to hear your view as it is always sound, this picture is bad and the back ground was white, not sure why they always come out blue. The stones I have I suspect was left behind after gold has been taken, the place I get them considers all stones as glass I think, and melt all gold they get and been throwing the stones away,

Was guessing all these loose stones were chucked out of their settings when gold got so high. May be some quality of the paper, if that's what it is, that comes out blue to your camera.

I will try it today and see if I can get some better pics, I didn't ever get stones till lately, stones are lovely little things of beauty, and it's amazing how dirty stones get when in a old ring. I guess this is why people only see the gold, I guess

Also cameo, I think some of them look very old and I've seen a lot of different cuts, some I've not seen before. Someone told me that I can buy rings to fit the stones, but gold price is high so would cost a lot, LOL

Since many gem cuts have been around a very long time, & the stones themselves are ancient, when out of the setting there is little to go by for age. Exceptions are stones with an 'eccentric' cut, one that does not follow old patterns & may be irregular, or stones with colors or other properties not found in nature, such as 'mystic' topaz. Even settings can be deceptive, since Victorian & Deco keep coming back in fashion. Ring stones get knocked around, so chips & scratches & scrapes not only tell something about the material, also how much the ring was worn.

Thanks cameo great help with loads to think about, some of the bigger stones I posted before have chips and signs of damage, I guess there are loads of stones knocking about, did you hear about that massive diamond someone bought at a car boot sale for £10. I hope I get that lucky. LOL I won't forget your help
