A glass cornucopia from an unknown Japanese glass house, made in a very Italian style.
The paperweight base is quite simple with it's colour and air inclusions, and the clear cased blue horn is a little bit clumsy in shape. All in all it's an attractive piece of glass, and likely produced in the thousands for export during the 60s and 70s.
It has a base sticker JAPAN, a generic sticker often applied to items sold in volume to various department and home stores.

One of the reasons I think people have been slow to collect Japanese glass is because of items like this cornucopia. I have no issue with it's style, or technique, or attractiveness; it's more what it represents. That is: the production of Japanese glass that copied successful ideas from other countries, making them cheaply, and selling them in volume. I think a lot of glass collectors can't see past this appropriation to then look closely at other Japanese glass.
I believe similar is happening now with Chinese glass.
Remember however that this production is market driven, by the West, and allows many to have hand made glass items at an affordable cost. It still requires a skilled glass maker to make these items, and is probably little different is concept to the items churned out by the Czechs and English 100 years ago.
