Hello rwtrogod: You asked for any help, so here is all i can give you from your description, and pictures. This design is called a dagger, and many many companies made them from long ago, until today. I do not know the the length, as you did not say, but my search description would be this: Vintage Dagger, ??? long, Steel cross guard, Stacked leather washer handle, with brass hex nut, holding an aluminum pommel, (or words to that effect). From that description, you may only narrow the maker down to a "Visual Match Guess". Your best bet is to work on raising a makers mark on the Ricasso, or exposed tang of the blade, if you truly want to know the maker, and how old it may be. I would also ask these questions:, how long have you lived in this house where you found it? How deep was it buried? Did an old ww1, or ww2 vet live there before you, ie. possible war bring back? Did it have any signs of blood on the blade, ie. possible crime weapon? If i were you, i would take a wire brush, or fine file, and or emery board, and smooth off a portion of the Ricasso on each side. Then, if need be, use a Pencil lead, Chalk, or black shoe polish, etc. to try to shade, and or highlight any parts of a makers mark, or country of origin name, such as USA, Germany, Pakistan, etc. If it was hand, or home made, no marks may be present. Standby, as we have a few more knife collector's here at CW, and Good Luck To You.
I will add dimensions and any othere information I can come up with. I sincerely appreciate you looking into my mystery dagger
Your Welcome!
Once I get off the road I will post all the information I have with measurements etc etc
