After buying this beat-up trunk at a yard sale, I noticed the tags and stickers that were on it, and that it had a shipment sticker from the Railway Express Agency (1920-1970). The shipment date looks like it says 1944 and the declared value was $1100. The tag that was on the side leather strap says the name L.M. Hughes. Also, the trunk has the number 14 on it and the lock says U.S.A Excelsior Stamford Conn. 5988.
I would like to find out more information about this trunk and how old it is or maybe even who it belonged to. Thanks.

ancordova: the 1900 Sears catalog lists over 40 trunks with drawings, descriptions and prices. The original catalog is hard to find but there is some good reproductions available.Just the other day seen a dvd of the 1900 catalog on eBay. Have fun in your quest.

These trunks were made around the 30's and 40's and were the standard no frills issue of the day.

Thanks for the reply, do you know how much they cost now?

Honestly a very low value -- they just do not measure up to the older ones that had better material and workmanship. Look in the classifieds in your area and you will get a better idea.
