These two cast iron items featuring SHELL GASOLINE iconic trademark symbol came out of an old estate. Trying to find information on what they where originally used for. They are 9 inches tall x 8 inches wide x 3 1/4 inches deep, they have 2 sunken holes 1 3/8 diameter, as to hold bolts, hole 1 inch diameter. They are heavy pieces each weighing 5 pounds. They are blacken as seen in the picture provided and that all appears original. My original thoughts were that they were gasoline pump tops, but I have not been able to locate anything like them thus far. Any information on these oddities is appreciated

      Bookends ???

Even if they weren't intended as bookends, looks like they'd make a good pair anyway?! :-) Their 'bolt holes' are indeed a curiosity, making me wonder if these might have been part of some sort of tire machine, or otherwise 'heavy duty' thing...?

sure they could be mounted and repurpose as bookend or definitely as a desk feature.

I agree AnythingObscure that the curiosity of the bolt holes do indicate that these 5 pounders were secured to a much heavier piece and were not meant to be removed too easily, being 2 large bolts to be removed. Hopefully someone may have a clue as to what... as all the sites I have searched I haven't seen anything that has these attached nor even just the piece.

Fancy ink wells for the office desk?
