    Bung augers were used to drill the holes in the side of wooden barrels and kegs for a plugs and spigots. This old one was manufactured by C. S. Osborne & Co.

      I was looking at this auger and thought, man that would be a wicked weapon in a street fight.

      I remember from my working-in-a-pub days, the smaller bung, which fits in the middle of the large bung is called a spile. This was on top of the barrel. (BTW the barrel would be on its side on the stillage, so the top would be the side... Is that clear?) The end bung, (on the side, low down) which carried the spigot or tap had a ready-perforated bung, which the tap-man would drive the tap through with a huge mallet.
