    This is made of metal - approximately 4.5 inches long by 2 inches wide. Has "PAT OCT 23 77" stamped on one side and a very faint "S" on the other. Found in field of what used to be farmland. Would love to know what it is...thanks!

      This appears to be a "Bracket", and or "Face plate" That was attached to another assembly. It could have been attached to anything. Google the patent date and see what looks like it might fit on. Or stick around, and maybe another member will know.

      It's part of an old trunk as shown in drawings for a patent "Improvement in Trunk-Fixtures". Item I, "a weighted, self-acting hook or catch which engages with a suitable pin or projection to hold the latter in a raised position." https://www.google.com/patents/US196500
