Found this Indian basket at a yard sale. Paid $1.00 for it. It looks old and of Indian design. It measures 12 inches across. The back (see first photo) is a little rough and shows where material was knotted. It is a tight weave. It appears to be an over, under weave. Is in good condition but looks old. Any idea of tribe association or value?
Mistake in my photos. The back side of the basket is photo no. 2.
Also a mistake in your identification. This is not an Indian basket. It is African, made by the Hausa, of Nigeria. (Also one of the most-commonly misidentified as Native American Indian, if it is any consolation.)
They have been imported to the U.S. market for years (30 -40, maybe more). They are still being made, and found at most flea markets and shops dealing with African crafts, usually priced in the $10 or under range.
