Small Basket with Two Handles and Hinged Lid

I picked up this small basket at a flea market recently. It is in great condition, no cracks or splits all of the hardware is in tact and works fine. I have seen a lot of this style over the years but not many this size. It is approximately 5 1/2 tall not including the handles, 8 1/2 by 6 1/2. Not sure if was for carry lunch or for something else. Due to the small size it wouldn't hold very much. I'm looking for advice on the best way to clean it up and information on age. Don't know much about baskets but when I saw this I had to have it, got it at a great price so couldn't pass it up.
