I bought this item at an auction but I really don't know what it is. I am hoping that someone can give me some information on it....what it is, how old it is and if someone would have an idea of how much it is worth? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you. Linda
For washing babies?
Not for washing babies, but for your private parts rather! It's a bidet :) Enameled washware came into production late 1800's. The legs feel a bit younger, post-victorian but not sure...
But now I see the stand doesn't fit. I would guess the stand is older, that's why I got confused with the legs. The original bidet probably was made of porcelain. When that broke it was replaced by a more modern enameled bidet. Just a guess.
Thanks for the information. I wondered whether it was a fancy chamber pot!
How old do you think it is? Any idea of what it would be worth now? Any idea where it was made and the mark on the enameled bottom? Thanks so much!
I would guess 1920-30's for the bidet, and the stand a bit older. Not really the site for an appraisal but if you bought it at an auction, I guess that's roughly what it's worth! I haven't seen the mark before, but the shape of the jug gives a hint that it's a manufacturer of sanitary goods. That water pitcher looks like the ones used with a wash basin. Quite common in Europe. Here's a chat forum you can google translate. If you scroll down a bit, you'll see one very much like yours. http://www.antikviteter.net/antikprat/messages/185/538909.html?1361560073
Thanks so much for all the information. The link was helpful too! Actually I paid $5.00 for it so I'm sure its worth more than that!! I didn't want an appraisal, just an idea of what I have. Thanks again!
Sounds like a bargin! Nice find!
Good one, OlofZ :-)
