It's a 1964 New York World's stamp. I'm almost positive it's a first day but I'm confused about the markings on it. Specifically the "PRAY". I can't find out much. Can anyone help please?

Why do some have it but others don't?

Don't know, seems to be up to the post office itself to decide. "Pray for peace" was the most popular, started in 1954 and used throughout 60's and 70's. Here's some history on the slogans. http://fsucardarchive.org/exhibits/show/postmarkcancellations/slogancancellations
