Japanese Chawan? signed and showing Calligraphy.

I thought the calligraphy was really well done on this little goodwill find. It's just under 3 inches tall by 3.5 inches across. it has a small mark on the base. can anyone shed any light on this piece? thank you!

i think it's Japanese, but not positive.
