About 9 months ago I posted some Grone & Co. soda / beer bottles that included a Grone & Whelan bottle. Just recently I acquired another Grone & Whelan bottle that has been tumbled and polished.
Grone & Whelan were in business from 1878 til 1881. Unfortunately John Whelan died some time in late 1881 or early 1882 and Henry Grone formed a new partnership with a Ferdinand Rau.
I thought I would post a comparison showing both bottles. The tumbled bottle was made by either the Wormser Glass Co. or the Thos. Wightman & Co. as indicated by the W on the bottle. Both glass companies were based in Pittsburg, Pa. The other bottle was made by the Lindell Glass Co. in St. Louis, Missouri. as indicated by the L.G. Co. on the bottle.
I like them both, the tumbled bottle is really smooth however the embossed letters are somewhat faded. The other bottle had strong embossed lettering yet the inside staining detracts from the beauty of the bottle.
Beautiful!
