WWII era sword scabbard belt hook and chain

[ORIGINAL TITLE: heavy belt-clip/hook/chain for keys, or night watchman's clock, or *something*???]

I've always figured this thing was intended to hold a night-watchman's clock without ever knowing why -- it just seemed like a logical use for what appears to be such a high quality item. BUT NOW, after a few hrs spent searching around the internets with all kinds of possible keywords, I haven't found the *slightest* thing that looks even close to it whether to hold a clock, a big ring of keys, some other kind of tool, or anything else at all. It is absolutely beautifully designed, machined, and constructed, in every respect.

I'M STUMPED -- does anybody else around CW know what this thing is really supposed to be??? <beg>

It is likely made from nickel plated brass, nothing is magnetic but the small hook itself. On the backside of its belt clip are the words "RUST PROOF N.S.MEYER,INC." and "FRANCE". The way its 'chain' is made, its overall length can be from between a little over 9" (if collapsed) to almost 12". (if fully extended) Both its belt clip and small clip are springloaded to hold them closed, the small clip also has a threaded collar that can be used to lock it closed.

THANKS SO MUCH to TubeAmp and lzenglish -- y'all's clues led me right to the correct 'real function' of this chain!! I would have never thought it held a sword -- must confess that even that didn't make any sense to me at first (as why would one want their sword hooked to their belt on a 12" chain?) until I finally found a pic showing this item 'in context', holding the *scabbard* of a (ceremonial?) sword instead, which *does* make perfect sense?!!! <applause>

Now attributing this to the WWII timeframe, based on finding an identical item (and several more similar) so labeled, at various sources.

(and for the record, I *still* think it makes a way-cool chain to hold my keyring, since I'm pretty sure I don't own a sword or scabbard... <lol>)
