Miniature plate basket made by a member of the Paiute/Washoe tribes. It was made using three Willow rods, the one place that is damaged shows this, and woven with shaved Willow. The designs are made with Redbud. It is three inches in diameter, and it appears that this was used to put grain on. Maybe this was a bridal gift? It had a lot of white grains stuck in the wefts and most just came off but there are still bits here and there that are deeper in the weave.
I do not collect many baskets from the Native American tribes on the West Coast, mostly because they are expensive and I have to watch what I spend but every now and again I find treasures like this that I just have to get. I do searches for miniature baskets here and there because smalls are easier to keep and display in an apartment and that is how I found this one. It was pricey but worth it!
If anyone knows the designs, I would very much appreciate it if they could tell me what they mean. Enjoy the pics :)
