Sasaki have been one of Japan's greatest producers of quality pressed glass and cut glass, and I have rarely seen any hand made objects from them. When I first saw this vase I liked it lots, but I was really surprised to see the Sasaki sticker on it. Such a different piece from them; like no other.
It's been hand made from a pretty, crimson glass with a great contrast of blue spatter that has been drawn as the vessel was blown. A thick case of clear glass has been worked into wing like ribs that extend above the lip.
The shape is interesting, tapering from the base upward, and it is much thinner in profile than front on.
It has the older Sasaki star sticker, prior to the 1970s, and I have no reason to doubt this is a Sasaki piece. Perhaps it was made during a brief period when they ventured into hand formed glass, perhaps in response to the success of hand made glass from other brands.
It is a well made and attractive piece. I don't think Sasaki have ever made a bad bit of glass!
Height around 25cm
