Raija Tuumi (1923 - 2016)
was born in Kiukainen and went to the ceramic department at the Art Industry School from 1946 to 1949. Short after Tuumi started to work at the Arabia Art department, where she did these fantastic uncomplicated shapes, often with patina from metal oxides. Tonality is scarce and the colors ascetic. from time to time Tuumi used shining cobalt blue glazes, sometimes with elements of purple and green, to counterbalance this austere, as this stunning piece shows
She throwed her pieces by hand and you will often find circular traces of her hands, like here. In 1974 when the Arabia Art department was refurbished, she left Arabia and founded her own studio Jousapot where she continued to throw in a smaller scale. Sadly she passed away last year.
