I'm curious if someone here might recognize this enough to be able to shed a further clue exactly what it is?? I purchased it loose at a junk shop because I liked its shape and color, then added the black string and silver bead to it in order to add it to the small assortment of doo-dads hanging from my rearview mirror where its mostly been ever since. Then the other day I got to wondering if it might be something I should take slightly better care of...?? (maybe with a nice chain, and maybe kept with the jewelry instead?)
It is about 1-1/2" long and about 3/8" at its widest, made of a smooth polished reddish orange 'stone/rock-like' material with a gently tapered faceted "crystal" shape and pointed bottom end. It is somewhat translucent with a slight 'graining' to be seen within it, and there is a silver (I think) double-loop hanger affixed somehow to its flat top end.
I don't know what it is actually made of or if its shape is natural or manufactured -- nor do I really have any idea how old it could be -- I fully admit that jewelry/gemstones are *far* from my area of expertise. Can anybody help edjumucate me further, please??!!
THANK YOU very kindly valentino97 for your quick clue -- searching for "carnelian" does indeed seem to provide much more potentially useful info than otherwise searching for "red crystal"...?! <applause> :-) :-)
Leave it on your rear view mirror. Valentino is correct about the color & mineral family of carnelian, but it does not form crystals. Even if natural stone, it has been cut to this shape & quite possibly dyed to enhance/even out color. But rounded edges where facets meet say glass to me, as does the way the bail has been attached directly into the material. If it makes a pretty light catcher, it's in the right place.
More kind thanks to cameosleuth for the further info! It is indeed now back on the mirror where it does add a nice little touch of color -- which is why I bought it (for all of a buck, probably?) in the first place...?! :-) :-)
Thanks also to fortapache, TassieDevil, racer4four, aura, kyratango, and Trey for your <love>!!
