Lovely Art Deco pottery lidded dish

Odd that it has a hole in the top, for soap perhaps?

No makers mark, maybe part of a wash set?

Odd abstract design on the lid, nice item

Any ideas of maker or use?

It's called a hair receiver. You put hair cleaned off brushes into it.
