I'm new to sewing and start collecting Vintage Singer Sewing Machines.

Starting from White sewing machine which I wasn't impressed much. Then I get to know featherweight. Got one, impressed, then 222k, then 301A and 411G. Crazy me, have all of those in 3 months without sewing knowledge. Now, I'm all set with equipments and tools. Time to focus on sewing skill.

This little gem has blackside parts on her body. Take a closer look and you will find them. She is unique.

That is a very nice Featherwieght machine . It looks to have been well cared for .

Thanks, Nancy. I think it's hardly used. If you look closer, she has some blackside parts on her body. So unique and rare. I bought a whole set of blackside attachments to go with her. She would be the one that sits on the shelf getting admired. I'm proud of her and honor to have her.

Love it, but love the one with the free arm 222k more. Wish I had one.

braprut : I thought that the faceplates on the blacksided Featherweights was also black . I can not really see all of your machine in the photos , but I did a search on the internet on blacksided Featherweights and it listed things that should be black . They are :
      1. black coated scroll faceplate . ( The faceplate on yours is silver . )
      2. black presser foot lifter bar . ( This I can not clearly see in the photos . )
      3. black handwheel rim . ( Yours has this . )
      4. black stitch length regulator backplate . ( Yours has this . )
      5. black foot and accessory feet . ( The foot on yours is silver . )
      6 . black attachments .

Your machine may very well be a blackside that someone put other parts onto . At any rate it is a nice machine . I had a Featherwieght for a while , but never used it . So I sold it to an owner of a quilt shop .

No, she isn't blackside featherweight. She has blackside parts on her. I think they just put leftover blackside parts on the machine, especially AL series. I see some of them on ebay and most of them are AL series. She is unique in a way that is different from other regular featherweight. I'm looking for blackside face plate now.

Thanks for the information, Nancy. What machine do you have and use now? Where can I see your post? I'm new to this site.

What machine do I use ? Oh my , I have quite a collection . It all depends on what I am working on . I have a treadle Singer Redeye in mint condition that I have set up in my livingroom just so I can look at it , but I do use it some . I guess the machine I use the most right now is my grandmother's Singer class 15 clone made in Japan . It will sew just about anything . I have sewing machines in just about every room of the house . I just can not pass up a good deal on any sewing machine . I have several White machines , one of them a treadle . I have Kenmores of all types , several Brother machines and a lot of Singers . I fix and restore all types of vintage and antique machines . Some I give away , some I sell . I do not have any pictures of my machines posted here . I am using a new laptop computer and I do not know how to upload pictures to it . If I ever figure it out I will post pictures . I do however belong to a sewing machine group on wefixit and my daughter did post photos of some of my machines there . I would have to go there and look for the photos before I could even tell you how to find them . I do not look at them very often .

I know how you feel about can't get pass a good deal on any sewing machines. I can't either but now I have too many for someone who is new to sewing. OMG, you are a handy man too. I can do only basic thing, clean, oil and lube them. now I'm have a minor problem with this machine. There is a sound when I press all the way on pedal or when I sew on heavy or rough fabric. I think it might have something to do with feed dog setup, it might be too high. I check on other things according to service manual, they all are good. I don't have that sound with 222K or it's just normal for 221.

I do belong to that group too but I can't figure it out how to browse. It doesn't seem to be friendly user.

braprut : Yes I work on the machines when I can . Right now I am having to go for theropy on my hands so I have not worked on any for a while . As for the sound your machine is making it could be that you need to adjust the belt . The belt should be just tight enough to turn the handwheel without slipping . There should be just a little bit of give to the belt when you press on it with your finger . If there is no give it is too tight . If you are having trouble browsing the wefixit site just ask on there for help . I can not tell you from here how to do it . I would have to be on there myself and talk you through it . There is a wealth of information there if you know how to find it . But like I said just ask .

Thanks, Nancy. I did adjust the belt. I think it's something to do with feed dog. I try by lifting the pressure bar, there is no sound. But when I run fabric to it with the pressure bar still up, that sound comes back. It sounds like knocking between feed dog and presser foot. I will find it out and look in that wefixit side.
    10. Nancy Salisbury, 13 years ago
barprut : Try tightening the pressure on the pressure bar . Turn the little nob on top of the machine on the left end . If it seems to be tight already try loosing it a bit . You could also take off the faceplate on the end and try a little oil on the pressure bar it'self .
    11. braprut, 13 years ago
I did all of those. The only thing that I haven't done is the feed dog adjustment. I will wait. Don't want to do something that will ruin the whole. Thanks Nancy.

I also have a 221 with the combination of plated and blackside parts - s/n AK762416. On the machine, the needle clamp (but not the screw), the presser foot screw, the needlebar pressure screw, and the bobbin thread guide are blackside. In the accessories, the feed dog cover plate, the adjustable hemmer, the seam guide and it's thumbscrew, and the loop-handled screw driver are all blackside. I think that it's probably a matter of using up parts, rather than something unique and rare, but they look lovely.
