This 8" x 8" woven wire fence sample advertised the attributes of the Keystone Wire & Steel Company's product. This company still produces Red Brand Fence. It may also have been carried around by a fence salesman. The small label was unreadable until I used fine sandpaper to reveal the wording. Many would say that I lowered the item's value, but knowing what it said means more to me. I'm guessing the 1930s or 40s.
I'm pretty sure Keystone Steel & Wire is still in business in Peoria (Pekin) IL.
Good observation. I should have mentioned that. Thank you AnythingObscure.
I would have done the same thing you did although differently. Without knowing what the plaque says you don't know exactly what you have. I think you used good judgement in cleaning it up.
Fhrjr2 - For future reference, what would you have done to make the label readable? Thanks for you encouragement.
Did you try rubbing pencil over paper? I would imagine that would have gotten the raised letters. Or possibly dusting flour over the area and smoothing out the hills from the valleys, so to speak.
Katherine - Thank you for your astute ideas. The pencil rubbing should have been my first thought but I was consumed with the idea of a readable photo for the listing. Never heard of the flour idea. You may have a career with NCIS.
Shhhhh! ;)
