My opinion is this is a fantasy pot, but will rely on CanyonRoad to correct me. It has a sort of Kokopelli decor but like no Kokopelli I've seen. The signature, Stiles, I thought I matched to a potter by the name of Judith Stiles, she makes cutesy type stuff now, but I thought I saw some earlier pieces that had Southwestern themes. I contacted her, she offered to confirm if it was her piece, then never did. So there we are. Help with this pot greatly appreciated. I am posting this under NA, but will change depending on input. Thanks!
ETA: Thanks to CanyonRoad for helping solve the mystery. :)
I'd say it's "Native American themed design" but not Native American made, and therefore can't be sold as such. It looks more like a studio pottery piece, made for the decorator market, which is what she apparently is doing now.
Thanks, CanyonRoad, for confirming my feeling about this pot. I don't know if it is the same Judith Stiles but as I said I had found pieces of her earlier work that seemed to suggest this could be hers, as well as the signature appearing to match. In any case, I was curious about the iconography of the piece. What is the hole meant to signify, I wonder? The bear paw? The story of Kokopelli I am somewhat familiar with but this one is quite stylized. I don't know how all these elements relate, except as the potter's whimsy. Thank you again for your generous help, not only with my pieces, as you know, I follow your responses with great interest and admire your expertise and kind help to everyone.
Very nice pot katherine and what would we do without CanyonRoad on all these unknown pieces whether they are real native American or made for tourist or decor only.
I love the traditional motifs in conjunction with the modern stylish shape with this hole and angular shape!
Very happy to see a new post of your collection, missed them a lot :-)
Merry Christmas Katherine!!! And a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous 2018!!
