This is my first! I'm trying to identify the age and style of my Christmas present from my fiancé. I don't get to inspect it until it's delivered tomorrow so I'm missing some details. I'm told their are no maker marks on the back but there might be one under a drawer. It has four drawers that were made without handles, using the key is the only way to open them. I find the "Step" above the fourth drawer super unique. The space above the top drawer is a hidden compartment, the top slides backwards to get into it. Judging from the second photo of the open cavity it looks like its hand chiseled dove-tail. I can't tell if the scroll work ornaments are reproduction/embellishment that were added later or genuinely hand carved. No idea what type of wood but it's a veneer and highly polished.
Tough one I think. When first looking it seems to be possibly English Regency and then it also looks like a piece of Biedermeier furniture. The other thing is it looks like it may have had a base at one time with maybe more drawers. I believe it probably is a mahogany veneer, that seems right for this style of furniture. It should have a base possibly with feet but we may never know on that.
Actually we do! Well, sort of. The bottom drawer contains (I'm told) four brass and ceramic/porcelain wheels. Not sure if they are original however so you could be right about a different lower base. Thanks for the era suggestions! Now I have a place to start my search. It arrives here in three hours so I can get a better look at it.
Hope you "get happy" with the piece. I love the strong look to it. I guess you may have to turn it over to get a better look at the base. I like the acanthus leaf carving also which probably looked better when it had a base and it was higher up.
