trying to find out if the name on box is the name of these glasses by Georges Briard.
please see pics for name Barrel Brien Exec.
I just got them yesterday at an auction & have never heard of Mr.Briard but found out he was very popular maker, but couldnt find any info on these. thanks for any help.
You probably already know, but Georges Briard was a pseudonym. His real name was Jascha Brojdo (born Jakub Brojdo). He emigrated from the Ukraine or Poland, depending upon who's writing you want to rely on.
Brojdo was also a painter, and all of his works carry that name. His partner, at the time, in the glass-making business came up with the Briard name for the glassware. His numerous designs were popular in the 50's, 60's and 70's, mostly fruit motifs or geometric shapes. They were widely popular and quite numerous.
Much of his later designs were produced by Culver, Libbey, and Anchor-Hocking. I would only guess that the geometric designs were 70's and likely produced by one of those. They were intended to be less ornate and more affordable to the common housewife at that time.
Brojdo (Briard) died in 2005 at the age of 88.
yes was aware that wasn't his real name was trying to find out if name on box was the actusl name for the set in the box. thanks for info
Well, the name on the box is Georges Briard, and the name on the bottom of the glass is the same. All of Briard's glassware contained his signature.
OH, I'm sorry .... LOL .... you meant does the name "Barrell Brown" describe the name of the set that was inside. (Senior moment)
My guess would be no, since they're not brown, and they don't resemble barrells, but in marketing, you never really know. I've not found a catalogue of Briard's specific designs, but if I do, I'll be sure to share it with you.
the pics are what was inside of box. they have black n white design, alt squares n circles
