I'm trying to find out how old this button is i found it on civil war grown while i was working a long with a skelliton key

I may be totally off here, but I don't think the button is a U.S. Civil War button. It wouldn't have a crown. However, the crown would most likely identify with the British. That might put it at the Revolutionary War.
I can't really tell, but are the letters "NY and V" ? Can you post better upright photos (and the back of the button) ?

I'll have to retract my assertion that this was British. In doing more research, there were "loyalists" to the British crown in that period and their uniform buttons did have the crown on them. They were called American Tory British Crown Loyalists. These were American colonists who still supported British rule. They were often called "tories", "royalists" or "king's men".
I'm now certain your button represents a volunteer unit out of New York.

There is an email and other contact info on the website, so they might be able to narrow this down. Good news is, it is Revolutionary war period, earlier than the Civil war.
