As an early image collector, I have often found the interest and value lies on the back of a carte de visite. Both the photographer and revenue tax stamps can greatly increase the interest in images.

This pair is a great example of the latter. When examined individually, they appear to have an unusual cancellation of "Abe" and "Tax", rather than the usual initials, date or an "X".

Together the spell out a photographers frustration with rising costs of photographs due to the "Abe Tax" levied on photographic images and in effect from 1 AUG 1864 until 31 JUL 1866.

I have seen individual cancellations of "War Tax", but this is the first of this type that I have encountered.

I wonder if the purchaser of the images even noticed the photographers expression.

My photographs, do not copy in any way without permission.

Very nice. Love the little girl's elegant posture. Was this an anachronistic, such as her right hand or a last minute tic or a gesture?

Thanks for commenting chibitika. I am very familiar with the erroneous attributions of posing stands to post mortem photography. Bogus pm images and bogus identifications (to famous people) are a mine field for new collectors.

Here is a posting I did a few years ago on posing stands and pm attributions:
