Solid wood looks to be hand carved shovel. Found inside friend's house and friend gave to me. I don't know what kind of wood it is made out of . it appears to be in good shape. Wood is smooth. Shovel is a bit heavy.

Thank you. I'm hoping to find out maybe when about it was made or how old it may be. I never seen a shovel like it til last week n I instalnly tell in love with it . I'm a beginner so i am clueless on what anything really is n where to go to get information. Thank you for commenting the I information you gave is extremely helpful to me ...thanks again...I'm wondering also what kind of wood it is made out of

I think it's an old grain shovel. Probably made out of oak. Possibly from the 1800's.

Yup! That is a grain shovel but don't be to quick to date it. I know people on farms up north that still make wooden grain shovels and use them. In use they get an aged look quickly. Folks I know make them out of Ash wood which is difficult to tell from oak. Normally when you cut a good piece of ash it will work up easier than oak.

Uhhhh.....OK......I meant 1986. LOL - good point, fhrjr2. Without some providence, it could have been made last year. Let's just say (while I take my foot out of my mouth) - they were common in the 1800's.

If it were mine I would call it vintage. Vintage is not relative to much. I have been called an antique but I am actually vintage at this point. With vintage you are making a broad statement. Should you refer to it as an antique people begin to ask how you can justify that. In that you aren't sure right now, call it vintage.

Thank you for the information and yes I will refer it as vintage. As I said before I'm a beginner so I'm learning everyday about this stuff. And you all have helped a great deal with the vintage shovel. I feel like I at least have an idea of what it is now and I am going to try ans learn more about the vintage piece as I go along. Thanks again for everything. Have a very merry Christmas everyone.
