CIRCA 1840s PRIMITIVE WOOD Country Farm EGG CRATE BOX. It measures 18-3/4" long X 9" wide X 12" tall, including it's LID and wire BAIL HANDLE. Made entirely of wood with dovetail corners, the WOOD BOX has a REMOVEABLE TOP and swivel BAIL HANDLE. Simple bent rods at each end rotate to unlock the lid, allowing it to be removed from the box. On the inside 36 position CARDBOARD TRAYS provide for the safe transport of gathered eggs. Manwarings were prominant in the town's mercantile trade. To insure safe transport of eggs from farms to area merchants; Art, Loren & John Manwaring went into the business of making EGG CASES, like this one. Prior to the use of their innovative compartmentalized crates , eggs were shipped in straw-laden baskets with much undue waste.
