adjustable mount (slides up and down a bolt) for some sort of tool,i.e. saw.A square headed nut or bolt would set in the end(single hole)Hope this helps!

Thick metal with a vented handle that long reminds me of a grate shaker for an antique coal stove.

I believe this is part of a lathe tool rest assembly. Here's what a modern day one looks like: https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/JooAAOSwiQ9ZVwPJ/s-l1600.jpg

SSBN641 I considered that also as I have three lathes out in the shop. I failed to see it that way but one never knows.

Looks like a motor belt tension adjuster. a carriage bolt would fit in the grove and another in the single hole on the other end. Possible a pedestal grinder tool rest adjuster bracket.

I'm kinda agreeing w/patchas, maybe some sort of motor-mounting part for a machine tool of some kind. (not so much w/SSBN641's lathe 'toolrest' idea, as it isn't 'machined' enough on its own for that, is it?) Perhaps the square hole or grooved slot could have also held a "square nut" instead of carriage bolt? My initial thought (when you first posted it) was a handle for some kind of large valve (gas tank? pipeline? boiler?) but if it was an actual handle for something, why would it need the grooved slot?
