Have a collection of more than a dozen of these. Research in progress as to attach names to some or hopefully all of these faces. This is my current endeavor. The collection was stored away with correspondence and other media to help me pinpoint to the genealogy based on these clues. Tin-types were rarely written on and these were no exception, not the two of which have a cardboard casing. Although the name and surname list is not that exhaustive or organized as one would hope, it provides me with enough tidbits to allow me to steer my legwork in the proper direction as to the genealogy and tell this family's story and or legacy.
Both of these appear to be post Civil War. Detailed photos of the front and back may shed more light.
It is not that unusual to find IDs on tintypes. On the earliest tintypes, identifications are often found written in the cases. With regularity, I have also found an ID scratched onto the back of a loose image.
Of course details such as photographer's information and backdrops can all add to the clues.
