A year ago or so my girlfriend and I got some 1880's barn wood from some friend antique store owners out by her cottage. We finally got around to doing something with it. I made 3 panels of it to put together above her fireplace. Surprised her for X-mas with them. We put them up and she loves them. They turned out pretty nice. Got some old hinges and handle to simulate a door opening also. We built some shelves out of pieces left over and will put up 2 more. She has a small pic of the barn the wood came from but not a good quality pic. I wish we got a good pic of the barn though.
enjoy & Happy New Year!

Very nice :)
Thank you Trey!
That is great. I think I will steal your idea if I find the right material.

fortapache - let us see something if you do. My girlfriend had the vision of this.
Thank you ho2cultcha & Caperkid!
Thanx Jlmam!
Love it! We have a couple of old barns near me and I'm looking into finding the owners
Your welcome :)
I have always liked the appearance of old barn wood but don't use it myself. A friend down the street just took down an old 6' cedar fence and cut it down to make wainscoting for his living room. Much as I like the appearance the hidden bugs and the rough surface that is a dust magnet and hard to keep dust free are more than I want to get into. I use it to build wishing wells for yard display. It always attracts people.
Thanx Jeremy123, yes go save that old barn wood!
Thanx fhrj2, I know what you mean about the dust. I thought of putting on a poly coating but she didn't want it.
Any poly coat would detract from the natural look. Allow me to share with you what I found works but will sound a bit odd. Get a brass (not steel) BBQ grill brush. Tape the brush to a shop vac wand so it extends beyond the wand opening. Using a gentle touch drag the brush down the surface of the wood with the vac running. The brush will remove the dust and the vac will suck it right up. Only work top to bottom. If you go left/right or bottom to top the vac won't gather it all up.
Thanx for the tip fhrjr2, I will try that in the future.
Thank you Anik!
