Hello everyone.
Purchased these last week, took a gamble as they were only listed as "Antique Sterling Silver Brooches" with no description whatsoever and there was only a picture of the front!! Bought the pair for $25.00 each.
Both are marked STG. Silver on the reverse, both have riveted hinges and "C" clasps.
Both appear to have been basically constructed the same way with silver mounts and enclosed silver backs. Next a layer of perhaps pearloid or something similar to this, which is slightly iridescent. I believe the silhouette might then have been put over this and then topped with a clear plastic dome. I don't think that these would be reverse painted "verre eglomise".
They are lightweight pieces but appear to be really well made and unlike some I have seen are totally sealed, not able to be opened.
The lady with the swan has a simple rope edge around the brooch and a safety chain attached. Measures 4cm across.
The larger man and lady with flowers brooch has me stumped!!! It would seem that the domed silhouette has been set into an arts and crafts mount.............It looks to me to be all original!! Measures 4.5cm x 4.5cm total.
Thanks for taking the time to read all this. I really like these and would love to have your opinion on them. Only a guess, but I am thinking 1930/40s for the time period, and also Australian because of the way the STG.Silver is marked. Thanks, Judy
Thanks for the love Karen :-) )
These are so pretty!
Thanks Jenni, happy you think so:-) )
Hey Judy, you are as pretty as your charming brooches :-)
Happy new year to you and beloved ones, full of happiness, health and... wealth to go with :-D
You got two interesting pieces with these brooches, I love the A&C mount and the decors are striking!
I think you're right with the "pearlised" background, not m.o.p.
The cover may be thin glass (tap against your front teeth...) and for me the silhouettes are applied to it, not on the background, as they appear to have some distance to it.
They're lovely! A great buy.
Aww thanks Pascale, such a lovely thing to say:-) )
I hope your Christmas was wonderful and I do sincerely hope your New Year will be a healthy, safe and happy one for you, your family and of course the rascals and kitty! :-)
Thanks for your help with these brooches.......have done the tooth test ......no, not glass unfortunately. I had a better look at the silhouettes and yes you are right, they do have quite a distance to the backing and throw shadows onto the backing, so must be applied to the clear top as you say which is great:-) )
Thanks Bonnie:-) )
Hi Ken, thanks for the kind comment, I really love them and it always amazes me to come across something that I had no idea even existed!!
You are such a clever buyer Judy! These are great. Please let me know how you identified them as Australian? Thanks!
